Adios Redskins! Examining Possible New Names For Washington's Football Team

The idea has been discussed for quite a bit of time, but Washington has finally retired the Redskins name. While I understand and support why they are changing the name, it unfortunately will not fix one of the most notoriously dysfunctional franchises in all of sports. But hey! Let's talk about some team name options for Washington to adopt.

Washington Redtails

Seemingly the favorite to replace the Redskins name, I am a fan of the Redtails. It's a unique name that has good meaning behind it (the nickname of a plane from World War II flew by African-American men). I've seen some jersey and logo concepts that are pretty good looking, which is an important part of a decision like this. With the Redtail name, the color scheme can stay the same, which is a plus. In conclusion, I could get behind the Washington Redtails.

Washington Red Wolves

I don't hate the Red Wolves name, but it is definitely not my favorite. I saw an incredible logo idea with a big W that has a building point on the top with a howling wolf through it. It sounds awful when I try to type it, but I can assure you it is terrific. The thing for me with the Red Wolves is that it doesn't flow or feel right to me. Calling them the Red Wolves instead of the Wolves keeps the color scheme the same, but sounds off. Like a red wolf? Like I said, I don't hate the Washington Red Wolves, but I'd prefer the Washington Wolves or something completely different.

Washington Senators

I am not a fan of the Washington Senators. While I understand the thought process put into this name, the Washington Generals sounds very dumb to me. Similar to Generals, Presidents, and similar names, it's just sooooooo tacky. Along with the tackiness, the Senators name would likely force a full rebrand and color scheme change. I'd guess the colors would be a form of grey, red, white, and blue, and while I get having a team from our nation's capital repping American flag colors, I just can't get down with the Senators name. I'd love to see someone make jersey concepts for the Generals (they'd probably be pretty interesting), but I don't want to see the Washington Senators become a reality.

Washington Hogs

I'm not sure why, but the Washington Hogs sound alright to me. It's unique, albeit a bit odd, but I think there are worse options out there. Football is a hard-nosed and gritty game, so the Hogs name is pretty fitting. There are a couple of ways they could go with the helmet, but ultimately the uniforms and brand would likely stick with the same color schemes and closely resemble the current Redskins stuff. The Hogs are an interesting team name that a lot of people probably wouldn't like, but I can get on board with the Washington Hogs.

Washington Warriors

'After the Redtails, the Washington Warriors is my favorite idea. First off, the Washington Warriors rolls of the tongue very very well. Secondly, the organization could go a few different ways with the Warrior name. They could keep the same colors and just add on a new logo and tweak the uniform, or they could totally rebrand and start fresh with different colors. I feel as though the Warriors could be almost any mix of colors and seem correct. Although there's a much better sports franchise with the same name, the Washington Warriors is a yes from me.

Now, onto some less feasible and "joke" name ideas.

Washington Retrievers

The Retrievers name isn't too weird, but I don't think the Washington Retrievers will ever be birthed. This idea came from ESPN's Field Yates on Twitter, suggesting Washington should adopt the Retrievers (haha get it!? adopting a dog!) and let Ron Rivera's dog Tahoe serve as the mascot. Tahoe looks like a very good boy and I'm fascinated to see what an NFL franchise would do logo and jersey wise when your team name is a cute breed of dogs. Unfortunately, I doubt this concept would come to fruition, but let's get Tahoe a jersey and have him hang out with the cheerleaders on game day!

Washington Crimson Tide

I mean, come on! Jonathan Allen, Landon Collins, Reuben Foster, Daron Payne, it feels like all of the formerly Redskins defense made a pit-stop in Tuscaloosa for college!

Washington Whales

Could you imagine an NFL team named the Whales? The thought of the Vineyard Vines whale logo being a pro sports team logo makes me laugh hysterically. Also, if I was a big offensive or defensive linemen, I would dread playing on a team named the Whales for obvious reasons. If the color scheme were to be some sort of blue, white, and grey, the jerseys would likely either be incredibly plain and boring (like Walmart Colts unis) or they'd go in a wild direction and they'd be hideous. Washington Whales, funny but wouldn't be a fan favorite.

Washington 4and12's

I'll end the article off with the most fitting name for the Washington franchise, the Washington 4and12's! I saw this from NotSportsCenter on Twitter and it made me grin maybe bigger than I've ever grinned before. Dan Snyder runs an atrocious organization and everyone knows that, so why not embrace it!? Picture it's Week 17 at FedEx Field, the 3-12 Washington team hosts a team that's clinched a playoff spot and is resting their starters. The Washington players will get to hear the packed crowd (probably 10-20 people with bags over their head) chant "Let's go 4and12's" as the 4and12's squeak out a 10-6 win against a team of backups. That was oddly specific, but go Washington 4and12's!

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! What name do you want for Washington? What's your least favorite name idea? Do you think Tahoe is a good boy? Let me know down in the comment section below!
