We are deep into NFL draft season, so what better way to kick off the draft content than a good old collaborative mock draft?! 18 people have helped me create this collaborative mock draft, with different people picking for different teams, many of whom picked for their favorite team. Each pick is followed with some analysis (mainly from the selector) and is labeled with the person's name and Instagram. Obviously, I'm Jer and you likely already know my instagram is @tgojer. This isn't necessarily what we expect to happen, rather what we would do in the scenarios. Keep in mind, there are no trades involved in this!
1. Jacksonville Jaguars select Trevor Lawrence (QB, Clemson)
Trevor has been a guy that everyone has wanted since high school and to have the pleasure to have him as a part of our team is amazing. We feel Trevor can turn this franchise around his first year and keep the franchise at a high point for a very long time. - Jake Norton (@jake.norton_)
2. New York Jets select Zach Wilson (QB, BYU).
Forgone conclusion already that Zach will be the pick. Joe Douglas has basically confirmed what Steve Young said about him going there. Zach has excellent arm angles, play outside the sticks, and the ability to make throws not many people can make. Zach also does a great job mentally preparing for games and even his career, as he is already talking to past QBs of the Jets like Josh McCown, Chad Pennington, and Mark Sanchez. - Chris Mullen (@chrismullen0)
3. San Francisco 49ers select Trey Lance (QB, North Dakota St.)
Trey Lance is absolutely the unicorn QB of this draft, QB prospects like him don’t come around often. He is a tough runner who can make any throw on the field, and has experience running a pro-style offense, which makes him more pro ready than many believe. The game might speed up on him year 1, but with Jimmy G grooming him and Shanahan’s masterful offense, Lance could absolutely hit the upper tier of his potential outcomes in SF, making this swing at his upside well worth it. - Jacob Siegel (@jacob_siegel_)
4. Atlanta Falcons select Penei Sewell (OT, Oregon)
Prior to opting out of the 2020 CFB season, Sewell was already the consensus #1 OL in this draft class. He can anchor a franchise at LT if he can continue to progress from the talent he's shown in Eugene. - Austin Bennett (@austinbennett.0)
5. Cincinnati Bengals select Ja’Marr Chase (WR, LSU)
With Penei Sewell off the board, the Bengals decision at 5 gets a lot easier. The Bengals hope adding Ja'Marr Chase to a receiver group with multiple young stars in Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins can take the unit to the next level. - Cooper Leyda (@cooper.leyda)
6. Miami Dolphins select Kyle Pitts (TE, Florida)
I considered taking Devonta Smith here for Tua, especially with Mike Gesicki at tight end for the Fins. However, Kyle Pitts is a weapon regardless of where you put him on the field. Also with Smith’s recent weigh-in, he may fall down some boards. - Joey Bonadonna (@joey.bonadonna)
7. Detroit Lions select Jaylen Waddle (WR, Alabama)
The Lions have a massive need at WR and he's the best one on the board in my opinion. His speed makes him an absolute mismatch. He's a playmaker, something the Lions truly have needed for years.
- Jacob Duncan (@jac0bduncan)
8. Carolina Panthers select Rashawn Slater (OL, Northwestern)
With the acquisition of QB Sam Darnold, that likely puts the Panthers out of the QB sweepstakes. They have ample weapons, so why not add in some protection for whoever is at QB? Slater is a plug-and-play guy that can fit wherever he's needed on the line. - Jer
9. Denver Broncos select Micah Parsons (LB, Penn State)
There’s a lot of uncertainty coming into the draft around Parsons and character issues, but there’s no doubt of his on the field skills. Seen by many as the best defensive player in this draft before sitting out the season, Parsons has huge upside if he can keep his off the field issues in check. - N/A
10. Dallas Cowboys select Patrick Surtain II (CB, Alabama)
With the 10th pick in the 2021 NFL draft the Dallas Cowboys headed by the incredible scouting of Henry Cannon draft the steal of the draft in Patrick Surtain II, son of NFL great Patrick Surtain. Surtain II looks to develop as one of the league's premier corners with great coaching and a wealthy front office. The Cowboys hope he will be the lockdown corner they desperately need for the future. - Hank Cannon (@hank.cannon2)
11. New York Giants select Devonta Smith (WR, Alabama)
The Giants addressed WR already this offseason by putting up a big pay day for Kenny Golladay, but the value on Devonta Smith is too hard to pass up at this point. Daniel Jones' receiver group goes from below average to one of the league's better units, and the Giants have a lot to be excited about on offense. - Cooper Leyda (@cooper.leyda)
12. Philadelphia Eagles select Jaycee Horn (CB, South Carolina)
With the 12th pick the Eagles select Jaycee Horn. Devonta Smith fell at #11, leading to the Eagles picking Horn. The Eagles biggest need along with WR is probably CB, so Horn is a perfect fit at #12. - Noah Mgrublian (@zonasideline)
13. Los Angeles Chargers select Christian Darrisaw (OT, Virginia Tech)
It appears the Chargers have found their franchise QB, now let's find someone to help keep Justin Herbert upright. Enter Christian Darrisaw, the 6'5" 322 lbs beast from Virginia Tech, who was consistently great on the blindside for the Hokies. He has his concerns, but his potential is through the roof. - Jer
14. Minnesota Vikings select Justin Fields (QB, Ohio State)
I was not expecting to pick a QB at 14, but it was just far too much value to pass up. Without the possibility for trades and without a top tier tackle available, it seemed clear. The Vikings have needs on the offensive line, there is no denying that, but there is a big drop in tackles after Darrisaw and it is still early to take IOL. Although Fields may seem like an odd pick, Cousins could either be traded to a QB needy team such as Denver, or he could be cut after the 2021 season with only $10m in dead cap. The talent of Fields speaks for itself, and the opportunity at an elite QB on a rookie deal is too hard to pass up. - Jacob Siegel (@jacob_siegel_)
15. New England Patriots select Rashod Bateman (WR, Minnesota)
With all of the QBs off the board, the Patriots select stud receiver Rashod Bateman. Bateman will be a day 1 contributor for Bill Belichick's Patriots and will be a nice addition to a WR core of Nelson Agholor, Jakobi Meyers, and Kendrick Bourne. - Brady Charette (@bradyyyy_charette_12)
16. Arizona Cardinals select Caleb Farley (CB, Virginia Tech)
Cardinals select Caleb Farley to add to a very thin position group. After losing Patrick Peterson in the offseason, a leader on the back end for 10 seasons for the Cardinals, they are able to take a guy who has a chance to start opposite of Malcom Butler day 1. - Joshua Dowsett (@joshua_dowsett)
17. Las Vegas Raiders select Zaven Collins (LB, Tulsa)
The Raiders defense, especially their pass defense, sucked last year. They really need help at pretty much every position, so I don’t think they could go wrong with picking a lot of different defensive prospects that might be available at 17. - Ryan Gluszewski (@rgluszewski)
18. Miami Dolphins select Azeez Ojulari (EDGE, Georgia)
The Dolphins surprised last season with an above average defense, now let's build on that with the disruptive former Georgia Bulldog. Ojulari possesses great upper body strength and has some eye-popping tape that gets you excited for his NFL potential. - Joey Bonadonna (@joey.bonadonna)
19. Washington Football Team select Mac Jones (QB, Alabama)
After the signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick, the WFT drafts Mac Jones. With Heinicke and Fitzpatrick at the core, you can not be sure that Washington has a long term starter on the team. A decisive playmaker, Mac could develop under veteran Fitzpatrick and be the piece Rivera and the Washington offense needs in the long run. - Gavin McLeod (@404Guapo)
20. Chicago Bears select Teven Jenkins (OL, Oklahoma State)
With the top QBs failing to fall to pick 20, the Bears will settle for the 6'6" monster Jenkins. Whether he plays OT or OG remains to be seen, but he has shown the makings of a quality pro linemen during his time at Oklahoma State. - Kai Hayes (@kai_hayes98)
21. Indianapolis Colts select Kwity Paye (EDGE, Michigan)
The two biggest needs here are OT and a pass rusher. I think they go with the player left who is highest on their board at those positions and here, for me, that is Kwity Paye. He's an athletic freak who has already shown to be a great run defender and has a ton of potential to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL. - Jacob Duncan (@jac0bduncan)
22. Tennessee Titans select Alijah Vera-Tucker (OL, USC)
Alijah Vera-Tucker is possibly the most versatile linemen in this draft, projected as an OG, but with the ability to play OT. The 6’4" 300 lbs OL provides versatility and could slot in anywhere for Tennessee, likely right tackle for Titans. - Noah Mgrublian (@zonasideline)
23. New York Jets select Alex Leatherwood (OL, Alabama)
Alex Leatherwood fits more as a guard and is physically impressive. The former Alabama lineman plays like a mauler and will be great next to Mekhi Becton. - Chris Mullen (@chrismullen0)
24. Pittsburgh Steelers select Travis Etienne (RB, Clemson)
With RB being a necessity on this team at the moment, I think Etienne is the right move. He is a prototype back in this offense with his ability to catch the ball at a high rate. - Trent Phillips (@trent__phillips)
25. Jacksonville Jaguars select Trevon Moehrig (S, TCU)
We feel Trevon gives us a major playmaker in our secondary that can push our defense over the edge. We feel he’s the best player remaining on the board and he’ll be a factor on this team immediately. - Jake Norton (@jake.norton_)
26. Cleveland Browns select Kadarius Toney (WR, Florida)
This feels like a bit of a luxury pick, but a WR trio of OBJ, Landry, and Toney sounds incredible. Kadarius Toney is a versatile weapon that would add another element for opposing defenses to prep for when facing Cleveland. - Jer
27. Baltimore Ravens select Jaelan Phillips (EDGE, Miami)
Regarded by some as the top EDGE in the class, this would be a slam dunk pick for the Ravens. They need another body on the edge, where Phillips has the talent and has shown flashes of being a big time impact player. - Jer
28. New Orleans Saints select Terrace Marshall Jr. (WR, LSU)
This doesn't feel like the territory to take a QB, so let's give Jameis Winston a local playmaker in Terrace Marshall from LSU. Marshall has been overshadowed at times by Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase, but he's a monster in his own right. - Jer
29. Green Bay Packers select Greg Newsome II (CB, Northwestern)
Yet again, no first round weapon for Aaron Rodgers. However, you can’t pass up on a defensive back of Newsome’s caliber. He will play nicely alongside Jaire Alexander and allows Kevin King to move to a CB3 role, which fits him much better. The Packers will likely find a target for Rodgers on Day 2. - Joey Bonadonna (@joey.bonadonna)
30. Buffalo Bills select Christian Barmore (DL, Alabama)
This pick was basically the best player available. Barmore is the best DT in this class and it’s not particularly close, so to get him at pick 30 is a steal. With Star Lotulelei in his 30s and Ed Oliver still as a wild card, Barmore will factor in on the defensive interior as soon as 2021 and will be a stalwart there for years to come, along with the ability to have some versatility along the line.
- Jacob Siegel (@jacob_siegel_)
31. Baltimore Ravens select Elijah Moore (WR, Ole Miss)
After adding Jaelan Phillips at 27, the Ravens need a real #1 Wide Receiver and Elijah Moore is probably as close to that as they could get given this spot in the draft. - Owen Schoenl (@owenschoenl)
32. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (LB, Notre Dame)
I’d be shocked if JOK lasts this far on Thursday night, but it’s a no brainer for Tampa if he’s still here. Although not filling a big need with David and White still in the LB corps, David is in his 30s and JOK is much more than just a downhill linebacker. He’s incredible in coverage and can play all over the field, as shown by him playing nearly 200 snaps in college on the line, over 400 as a box linebacker, and almost 700 as a slot corner. Although undersized for a true linebacker, he makes up for it in athleticism, testing in the 75th percentile or higher in the shuttle, 3 cone, vert, and broad, making him a great value for Tampa rounding out the first. - Jacob Siegel (@jacob_siegel_)
My Concluding Thoughts
Surely the draft won't quite go like it went in this mock draft, but it's a fun exercise to see where fans want their teams to go on Thursday. The first pick of the draft is really at #3, where Jacob Siegel took NDSU QB Trey Lance. I'm not sure if Lance is the pick in reality, but he'd be fun to watch blossom in the Shanahan system. I doubt the Falcons take Penei Sewell with the fourth pick, but I tend to be in the camp that doesn't understand why they'd draft a QB this year. The TE duo of Kyle Pitts and Mike Gesicki would be lethal, but terrifying for myself as a Jets fan. Micah Parsons at #9 is interesting, as he has the talent to be in the conversation for top defensive player in the draft, but also has possible character issues and QB Justin Fields was available for Denver. Surtain II to Dallas was an easy choice for Hank, while Devonta Smith would be another good weapon for NYG, although I'd expect them to look at EDGE with pick 11. I'd be shocked if Justin Fields made it out of the top 10, but if he were to fall to the Vikings selection, he'd have to be the pick. Tulsa standout LB Zaven Collins to Las Vegas is interesting, although it'll be more likely that Mike Mayock selects a reach from Alabama, Clemson, or Ohio State. Despite bringing in Ryan Fitzpatrick and holding onto Taylor Heinicke, Gavin makes a good point of the uncertainty at the QB position for the WFT, hence the selection of Mac Jones. Alabama OL Alex Leatherwood has kind of fallen under the radar, but I think would be a respectable pick for the Jets. RB is a need for Pittsburgh, but the value in taking a RB in the first round just doesn't do it for me. On the flip side in terms of value, Jaelan Phillips would be terrific for Baltimore at #27. Greg Newsome isn't a WR, but he's a good fit for Green Bay, as is DL Christian Barmore for Buffalo. LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is a spectacular value pick for the defending champs to round out the first round. In total, this was a fun mock draft and stay tuned to my final, personal mock!
Notable prospects not selected in the 1st: Najee Harris (RB, Alabama), Jayson Oweh (EDGE, Penn State), Rondale Moore (WR, Purdue), Pat Freiermuth (TE, Penn State), Samuel Cosmi (OT, Texas).
